6 April 2007 marked an historic day for Citizens Advice campaigning work. The new tenancy deposit protection law came into force on that day after 15 years of campaigning by the Citizens Advice service. What does this means for tenants?
Well, if you are starting a new Assured Shorthold Tenancy with a private landlord or agent and pay a deposit the landlord or agent must protect it by placing it into a Government authorised tenancy deposit scheme. If you have paid a deposit on a new tenancy after 6 April 2007 then make sure your landlord or agent has placed it in an approved scheme. The Government wants to make sure your tenancy deposit is protected so that:-
you get all or part of it back, when you are entitled to it and
· any disputes between you and your landlord or agent will be easier to resolve
